When I moved to the Gulf Coast, I saw how weather transforms our sense of time. Muggy hurricane season drapes time from one impending disaster to the next, with exhausted calms sagging in the intervening moments. Under the Southern heat, the most rigid plans collapse into wilted naps. The humidity is like some giant, invisible cat. It captures us and bats us around for it’s own amusement. With nowhere to run, we relax into the smothering apocalypse. On the West Coast, where I am from, people pay good money to learn how to cope with forces outside their control. But the South dishes out trauma-born insights for free. The boiling sun forces the most passionate enemies into a swampy truce. Tomorrow, we will argue and fight amongst ourselves. But today, we drift from calamity to calamity in peace.
